삶을 지탱하는 가족, 노동, 일상을 콜라주하다

Billie Zangewa, a black woman from Johannesburg, South Africa, best known for her intricate collages of hand-stitched silk pieces. His solo exhibition 'Flesh and Blood' will be held at Lehman Muffin Seoul from November 18 to January 15, 2022. This solo exhibition, held for the second time after the first exhibition with Lehman Muffins in October 2020, will be held sequentially in London and Seoul under the exhibition titles 'Running Water' and 'Flesh and Blood'. Both exhibitions were planned to introduce two groups of work that resulted from such appreciation, feeling grateful for the newly recognized family, labor, and daily life while working isolated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While Lehman Muffin Seoul's exhibition 'Flesh and Blood' focused on close communities such as family and friends, Lehman Muffin London's exhibition 'Flowing Water' examines the daily activities of working and caring for children and themselves. Jean Guewa was inspired by listening to a song called 'Sons and Daughters' (1990) by the Neville Brothers on Radio Nova, a radio station in Paris, France, and came up with two exhibition names.
Billy Jang-Gewa, who started her career in the fashion and advertising industry, captures personal and universal experiences through interiors, urban landscapes, and portraits based on textile collages. In her early work, she embroidered memories of Botswana's wild plants and animals into textiles, but soon turned to creating an urban landscape that focused on personal relationships and experiences as a Johannesburg resident woman. After the birth of a son, he begins to work on the interior landscape of the house, focusing on the interests that have shifted from self-reflection and femininity to motherhood and family. Often citing scenes or experiences derived from everyday life, they also show that they contribute to the smooth continuation of society, but most of the works depict work done by women who are often overlooked, downplayed, or ignored. Containing love for family, friends, and the human community, the life change caused by COVID-19 has also brought about a major change in the work with Jangge. Due to the spread of COVID-19 and subsequent social restrictions, many people close familiar relationships for safety and various regulatory reasons, and the importance of family
Because the castle was enlarged. In particular, the son of Jang Gewa is a subject that appears repeatedly in his works and is the central theme of the collage work introduced in this exhibition 'Flesh and Blood'. In a series of portraits, he depicts genetic and selective family members, with scenes ranging from fragmented pedigrees of immediate family members to close relatives and friends gathering to celebrate a son's eighth birthday. Furthermore, Lehman Muffin's 'Flowing Water' exhibition in London introduces a number of collage works made by visualizing changes that have occurred in nurturing fruits and daily repetitive actions due to the pandemic. The works presented in the London exhibition are based on the theme of the Seoul exhibition. He depicts scenes in the artist's daily life that may seem monotonous, such as meditating in the garden, working on the terrace, sitting in bed to comfort his son, and putting on and taking off his shoes every day. Sneakers with their toes covered in a kitchen cupboard near the rough edge of the work were captured as still life. “When I was living in London about 10 years ago, I bought Adidas sneakers from the Lily White store in Piccadilly Circus and wore them all the time. I always start my day with these sneakers on my work day. I spend a lot of time standing, so I wear these sneakers that support my feet well. The time to buy new shoes is fast approaching because they don't support my feet as well as before. there is. However, I have been with these sneakers for a long time, and it is difficult to let go because I am attached to them.” This work not only expresses the labor and support, daily life and comfort symbolically embedded in working sneakers, but also suggests the artist's strict commitment to continue his work despite the difficulties that frequently occur in everyday life.
'Billie Zangewa, the first solo exhibition in the United States with Billie Zangewa, was held at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) from October 20 to February 28, 2022, at the same time as this Lehman Muffin Seoul and London exhibition. : Thread for a Web Begun' is also held. The exhibition at the African Diaspora Museum introduces a wide range of works, from his work over the past 15 years to new works created specifically for the exhibition. Most of the scenes depicted in the layered silk collage work reflect his life and have an autobiographical character, but they also form a sympathy that goes beyond the personal journey of the artist Zhang Gewa. This is because his labor-intensive work process evokes the historical implications of 'women's work' and at the same time shows a modern reinterpretation.
Zhang Gewa's two exhibitions 'Flesh and Blood' and 'Flowing Water', which doubly reveal the special time and rapid change brought about by the global epidemic of COVID-19, present two perspectives on family life, both collective and private. It shows the importance of family, friends, and everyday life, revealed in a time when they are easy to catch. He looks back on the past two years with special emphasis on the relationship that has been strengthened and a candid view of family life in a different state through new works presented in exhibitions in London and Seoul. A series of works that provide viewers with an opportunity to reflect on changes in their lives, especially habits, relationships, and daily life, are a message of hope that the artist wants to convey, as well as a message about self, family, friends, and even the human community. contains love.
